Del City High School junior Dominic Berry has built his athletic career around versatility, effort and accountability. A varsity football player since his freshman year, Berry contributes to the Eagles in several roles while also competing in track and field.
“I play football and run track. In football I play wide receiver, linebacker, and back-up quarterback,” Berry said.
Earning varsity experience as a ninth grader remains one of Berry’s proudest accomplishments. The early opportunity allowed him to develop against tougher competition.
“Getting the chance to play varsity since 9th grade is an accomplishment I am proud of,” Berry said. “Being able to compete at the varsity level since I started high school has helped me improve a lot as an athlete.”
Berry said growth has required more than improving his on-field skills. He has learned to manage his emotions, take responsibility and understand that his actions reflect on both himself and the program.
“One of the biggest things is learning to control my emotions and take accountability for what I do on and off the field,” Berry said. “You have to not only represent your team but also your name, and that means owning your mistakes and focusing on what only you can control because everything is not always going to go your way.”
His faith and family supply much of his motivation. Berry credits his parents for their sacrifices and continual encouragement, while former teammate Chance Fanus left a lasting impact on his development as a person and athlete.
“My faith inspires me because it helps me keep going when things get hard,” Berry said. “I just try to trust God and know that everything happens for a reason, even if I don’t understand it at the time.”
